The Oscars — also known as the Academy Awards — is an annual awarding ceremony for the film industry. One of the four major American entertainment awards, the Oscars focuses on meritorious films in its art and technicalities, with 23 trophies for categories ranging from Best Cinematography to Best Animated Feature. This year’s Oscars was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and took place on March 11 in Philippine time. Here’s a quick rundown of this celebration of film:

Prior to the ceremony, films Oppenheimer and Poor Things received the most number of nominations, with 13 and 11 nods respectively. The list also includes the other most notable pictures of the year, with Killers of the Flower Moon amassing 10 nominations and Barbie earning 8.

At the end of the night, it was Nolan’s Oppenheimer that bagged the most awards. The historical drama won 7 out of its 13 nominations, with the list also including Best Cinematography and both Best Actors in leading and supporting roles. Christopher Nolan himself was awarded Best Director for Oppenheimer, bringing him his first-ever Oscar for directing.

Poor Things was next in the lead with four awards won. Most striking was Emma Stone’s win as Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Bella Baxter. Other awards the film received included Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Barbie, the biggest international box-office film of 2023, was unable to pull off its expected upset having lost most of its nominations, including Best Actress in a Supporting Role (America Ferrera). Its single win — Best Original Song — was handed to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for “What Was I Made For?”. However, Ryan Gosling was able to steal the show with his performance of “I’m Just Ken,” as he and his fellow cast members, all clad in suits of pink, dazzled the members of the Academy.

Thought to be Hayao Miyazaki’s final animated film, the newest Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron, was awarded the year’s Best Animated Feature, beating big names such as Disney’s Elemental and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Ending the three-hour-long event was the highly coveted award for Best Picture. The nominees for Best Picture were American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest. Each film had generated huge buzz in the industry beforehand, leading to the anticipation of who would win the prestigious recognition. At the end, it was Oppenheimer awarded with the iconic golden statuette as the final addition to the seven trophies that the film had won that night. Thus concluded the 96th Academy Awards.

We are only two-and-something months into 2024 — and already, films such as Dune: Part Two and Lisa Frankenstein have been making waves on the internet and the big screen. Other upcoming films such as Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) are among this year’s most anticipated, as well. The next Academy Awards are sure to be a whirlwind of chaos, just like this one. Do you already have any predicted nominees for the 97th Oscars? Let us know!
